EGM Consulting

Advice with a written outcome. We review the obligations, the systems and the governance behind a business, give a decision in writing, and where the answer is a system, build it. The work draws on finance and assurance training, sustainability and project management, and ten years leading in schools, and it is done by people who also build and run software.

The Position Review

A fixed fee, a time box, a written decision

Every consulting engagement starts the same way. The Position Review is a defined piece of work with its own fixed fee, agreed in writing before it starts, and it runs for two to three weeks. It ends in a written recommendation you can act on, hand to a board or a parent company, or take to another supplier.

"Do not build" is a valid outcome. If the business does not need a system, the review says so and says what it should do instead. We would rather be paid for that answer than for a build that should not have happened.

What it covers

Which obligations the business actually carries and which it has been told it carries. What it runs on now, what it pays for, and where the gaps are filled by hand. What one system would replace, what it would cost to build and run, and whether the saving justifies it. Where the numbers come from, so they can be checked.

Where a review touches a regulatory return or submission, your compliance scheme, accountant or adviser keeps responsibility for it. We prepare, evidence and recommend. We are not a registered auditor, accountant or tax adviser and do not act as one.

Services
  • Producer compliance

Packaging Extended Producer Responsibility, WEEE and Plastic Packaging Tax. Tonnage by material and by entity, classification and the evidence behind it, liability recomputed, next year's exposure, and the overlap between regimes. Then the system that runs the returns.

  • Retained compliance operations

Running a compliance workload month by month: data collection, classification, returns and evidence. Retained work, priced monthly, taken on part by part as each part is written down, run once alongside the present operator, and automated.

  • Sustainability baseline and goals

A chosen framework, an honest data position, and a few goals at a time with operational impact, a real financial saving and an equally real ecological and social improvement. A goal that does not make sense for the business does not make the list.

  • Systems and subscriptions review

What the business runs on, what it pays for every month, what one system would replace, and whether building it is worth the cost. The review that precedes most of the software division's work.

  • Security and governance policy

Information security policy, an annual IT security review and report including active testing, and a dated route to Cyber Essentials and ISO 27001, for organisations that need to show their customers and insurers how they are run.

  • Environmental, social and governance policy

Policies written to be used rather than filed: what the organisation commits to, how it measures it, and what it publishes. Carried through into the sustainability baseline so that the policy and the numbers agree.

  • Programme and project management

Running a defined piece of change on the client's behalf, with a plan, a budget, written gates and a report at each one. Fixed scope, fixed fee, one accountable person on each side.

  • Software behind the advice

Where a review concludes that a system is the answer, the software division builds it under the published terms: fixed fee, staged payment, code held privately, intellectual property transferring to the client.

How consulting is priced
Reviews
Fixed fee, agreed in writing before work starts, with a written output and a time box. Never open-ended.
Retained operations
A monthly fee for running a defined compliance workload, agreed for a stated term, with the scope sheet saying exactly what is included.
Advisory alongside a build
Where a client wants advice running alongside a software build, it is priced by the day and stated separately, so the build price stays fixed.
Capacity
Reviews are taken on a few at a time so that each gets the attention it needs. If we cannot start within a month we say so when you write.
Examples

Importers with producer obligations

Producer compliance review, system build and retained operations. Engagement scoped in 2026.

A group of companies importing electrical goods carries obligations under packaging Extended Producer Responsibility, WEEE and Plastic Packaging Tax across several entities, with the returns run by hand through an external operator. The engagement maps the obligations by entity, builds the system that runs them, and takes on the workload part by part as each part is written down, run once alongside the present operator with matching output, and automated.

Clients are named only with their permission. Further engagements are described in conversation.

What the company declines
  • Open-ended advisory. Every engagement has a written output and a date.
  • Regulated advice. Where a matter needs a registered auditor, accountant, solicitor or tax adviser, we say so and work alongside yours.
  • A recommendation we cannot evidence. Every number in a review has a source, and the source is in the document.
  • A review that is really a sales call. If the right answer is not to buy anything from us, the review says so.

What the business does, what obligations or systems the question concerns, and what you would want to be different in six months. From that we can say whether a Position Review is the right first step and what it would cost.
